So, recently at work we had to move desks and junk and I decided to clean up and take home all the post-it doodles that covered a good quarter of my desk. I don't understand entirely why, but there's something deeply satisfying about putting HB pencil to post-it paper.

Since editing posts containing images in Blogger is pretty hellish, I'm posting this again with the face & edits I personally liked.

Ink quills are fucking spectacular. I spent this entire last week inking and painting in my sketchbook while Scott soldered together his mail-order DIY console.

I haven't been posting much art these days cause I've been kicking it old school, what with this fangled real life painting jazz. I've really been enjoying it, the amount of subtle detail you can fit into a physical medium still somehow seems to be leaps and bounds more than digital to me.

Scott and I are separately trying to see if we can prototype a 2D game in one week. He's using GameMaker and I'm using Flash.

Man, I just can't compel myself to paint something. Draw something yes, but painting has had shit luck lately.

The really retarded thing is that I'm back in FLStudio again even though I've gotten comfortable with Live. But jesus Live, you go through all the trouble of a nice interface but why the fuck do you gotta make browsing your plug-ins such a unappealing pain in the ass.

The artist is engaged in a perpetual struggle against the positive-feedback loop of the brain, desperate to create an experience that no one has ever had before. And while the poet must struggle to invent a new metaphor and the novelist a new story, the composer must discover the undiscovered pattern, for the originality is the source of the emotion.

If the art feels difficult, it is only because our neurons are stretching to understand it. The pain flows from the growth. As Nietzsche sadistically declared, "If something is to stay in the memory it must be burned in; only that which never ceases to hurt stays in the memory."

This newness, however torturous, is necessary. Positive-feedback loops, like that shrieking microphone, always devour themselves. Without artists like Stavinsky who compulsively make everything new, our sense of sound would become increasingly narrow... ...Works like "The Rite" jolt us out of complacency. They keep us literally open-minded. IF not for the difficulty of the avant-garde, we would worship nothing but that which we already know.

My version:

Dear Left 4 Dead, I re-installed you for the 3rd time yesterday. Being productive all the time is nice, but if I don't have a method to unwind I end up getting bummed out a lot. I keep trying to quit you, but the other games just don't got the stuff you gots baby.
